on gear

yay for blogging!

um, basically i can't be counted on to contribute anything i already own to the shared gear pool. the only times i've backpacked at all have been with Midd mountain club gear or other peoples' stuff. i do agree that we should share as much as possible, though.

i'm a fan of two person tents. it seems bizarre to me for four people to all carry individual tents. if there's a good reason for that other than weight distribution and splitting up, i'd be interested to hear it. i assume that tents in general are a must-have?

someone else will have to answer the stove question...i know e-dawg had some thoughts on types. i'm clueless thus far in that department. filters? probably don't need 4, but maybe more than one. pots, yeah. i don't know if these are things you care about this early on, but toiletries? first aid?

that's all i can think of at the moment. whatever you do get, keep receipts, because we should evenly distribute our spending on group gear.

aight, gotta run. love you!

You only need one filter. I would carry some Aquamira as backup in case the filter breaks or clogs unexpectedly. In fact, you might carry both a filter and aquamira, and use the Aquamira on good sources and the filter on bad ones.

I'm also a fan of the 2, 2 person tent solution. :) Once the bugs go away you won't use the tents much anyway. You'll be the only people on the trail after about NJ. Thus the shelters will be empty, and you won't need tents to escape from silly section hikers or bugs.

You don't need much in the way of first aid. Some bandaids, Duck Tape, ibuprofen and pepto bismol is about it. One of you could carry a more advanced med kit (certainly less than 8oz!) But you're not going to be performing open heart surgery on the trail. If you're sick or injured, you'll get off. Even if you have to take a helicopter ride to make that happen. In any state south of ME, you're never more than a few miles from a road anyway. As the ATC will tell you, you're in *MUCH* more danger in the car driving to and from the trail than you are walking it.

The only toiletries I carried were a toothbrush, paste and floss. And hand sanitizer (if that counts). Obviously you 4 might wish to carry additional items, but you kinda get used to the grunge life of the trail. In ME you can bathe regularly in streams. As you go further south, you'll start hitting AMC run shelters with solar showers and other such nicities. You'll probably get off trail once a week, and showering once a week really isn't that bad after a while. Brush your teeth though! My teeth brushing habits totally died on trail, and my teeth have suffered. :(

You probably each want your own pot. You could carry one big one I guess, and then just use bowls. Donno. I always had my jetboil and boo boo had her pot.

Speaking of the other "pot"... there are a lot of pot smokers on the trail. and a surprising amount of smokers too.

I should note... not all section hikers are "silly". Most are very nice. But you certainly see all types on the trail.
